Determined to see some peak fall color, I headed up to Garden of the Gods inside of Shawnee National Forrest near Herod, Illinois. This easy day hike is gorgeous in every season, but the peak fall color was spellbinding this year.
The incredible views can be seen from the trail, but you won’t be able to resist climbing on the unusual rock formations along with all of the other sightseeing day hikers. Can you find the camel rock formation?
There is so much beauty to behold here that you may with to make it an overnight. The park system has a small tent camping area, but there is a much larger camping area suitable for larger travel trailers and RVs at Pound Hollow Lake State Park nearby.
For those who would prefer renting a cabin there are quite a few rentals in the area. There are even a few trendy one and two bedroom deluxe cabin tree houses for rent, but they book up many months in advance.
Make sure that you stop by Garden of the Gods Outpost near the entrance to the park which is run by the owners of the cabins and tree houses. If you are nostalgic you can make a phone call from their real working phone booth! They also have hot cocoa and chili during cold weather and ice cream treats in the summer.
The trip is not complete until you stop by the large statue of Sasquatch across from The Trading Post for a photograph with this famous cryptid.
If the real big foot crosses your trail or visits your campsite, please drop me a line here at the blog and happy hiking!
